Remembering Orthodontic Treatment During the Summer

We’re dedicated to providing all our patients, whether they’re kids or adults, with the orthodontic treatment needed to guarantee them a straight and healthy smile for the rest of their life. We understand that maintaining care of your braces and other orthodontic devices can be a lot of work. Now that summer vacation is rapidly approaching, this seems like the perfect time to relax, slack off, and get some time away from school or work. However, orthodontics isn’t something you can take a break from as well. Here are a few orthodontic tips for you to keep in mind, even as the sun, swimming, and other outdoor activities may have you more interested.

Remember to Brush Twice a Day

Even with all the fun things that you may have planned during your summer vacation, you still need to remember to brush your teeth twice a day – once in the morning and once before you go to bed. If it’s possible for you though, brushing after every meal is the optimal choice. If you’re going to be away from your house for a period of time that may distract you from your brushing habits, make sure to take a dental kit (a small bag with a toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss) with you.

Don’t Forget to Floss

Flossing may be more difficult for you when you’re undergoing orthodontic treatment, but it’s a process that becomes even more important when you’re wearing braces. Food can get trapped in your teeth easily, especially when you have braces. Braces allow more places in a person’s mouth for plaque, bacteria, and food particles to get stuck in. These can cause tooth decay and other related problems so you need to make sure to floss on a routine basis.

Stay Away from Hard and Sticky Foods

Hard foods can break wires and brackets in your braces and sticky foods can get stuck in your braces and even pull brackets apart. You might feel like this may severely restrict what you can eat, but this still leaves you many different foods to enjoy. You can still eat fun and delicious foods that are perfect for the summertime, like lemonade and ice cream. Just make sure to consume them in moderation!
